This apparatus is used the assessment of thermal behavior of materials and material assemblies when the clothing for protection against heat and fire exposed to a source of flames (predominantly convective heat).
A horizontally oriented specimens, partially restrained from moving is subjected to the flame from a gas burner placed beneath it and the amount of heat passing through the specimen is measured by means of a small copper calorimeter placed behind.
The time/temperature relationship of the calorimeter obtained during the test is used to determine the exposure time required to cause pain and second degree burn or blister in accordance with specified burn criteria.
